The project proposal BEEM-UP has been evaluated positively and invited for negotiation by the European Commission. The first negotiation meeting was held in Brussels on March 29th.

BEEM-UP aims to demonstrate the economic, social and technical feasibility of retrofitting initiatives for drastically reducing the energy consumption in existing buildings, and lay the ground for massive market uptake. BEEM-UP will be implemented in 3 sites (France, the Netherlands and Sweden) to incorporate innovative solutions to achieve a 75% reduction in space heat energy consumption, in addition to reducing the energy need for hot water and lighting, while ensuring a comfortable and healthy living environment.

BEEM-UP brings together a strong consortium of complementary background and expertise to demonstrate the technical, social and economic feasibility of drastically reducing the energy consumption in existing residential multi-family buildings, and replicate the developed concept in the European housing stock.

Innovation as usual

Within the framework of the Smart Energy Home program a first open innovation session in a series of three was held in Amsterdam. Nine companies participated, of which five partners from the Smart Energy Home consortium. All being together to generate new business / product ideas on efficient construction work, understanding energy use and comfortable living.

These two days started with the creation of a shared vision on innovation and directions for collaborative innovation were set. After this ideas were generated, which will act as a basis for future development, through a step-by-step open innovation process.

The concepts generated are responses to current and future problems and opportunities, but also annoyances identified by user input. One of these inputs was given by a senior representative of the Amsterdam city council, outlining their challenge to renovate some 250.000 appartments in the next 15 years. This session proved the value of open innovation again by delivering some high quality concepts, of which some are already taken to a next level. These developments offer a good prospect for the future of Smart Energy Home.
